Car Hire Lanzarote Airport

Lanzarote Airport is a well known holiday island in the Atlantic Ocean, as it forms part of the famous Canary Isle. It is one of seven Canary Islands of Spain, but is the island located furthest to the east, and just north of Fuerteventura. The island’s airport handles almost five million passengers per annum, and is served by a number of airline carriers. The airport is recognized by its code of ACE, and is located nearby the capital city of the island, Arrecife, as well as several other popular holiday resorts. Lanzarote car hire is provided by local and international car rental companies, which are all found in the arrival areas of the terminal buildings.

The international car hire companies offering their services from Lanzarote Airport include Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, National, Alamo, Auto Europa and Easycar, and the local companies present are Centauro, Goldcar, Marbesol and Record Rent A Car. These local companies are the most well known in Spain, and offer very competitive rental rates, while the international companies are used by millions of people around the world, in hundreds of different countries. All of them have a wide range of vehicles for hire, and comprehensive websites from where vehicles can be hired in advance. Other online booking sources are a reliable way to reserve a vehicle as well.

Lanzarote car hire desks are found in the arrivals area of both terminals, referred to as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 1 is the main passenger building of the airport, handling domestic and international arrivals and departures from the majority of the airline companies, while the carrier of Binter Canarias, for inter-island flights, uses Terminal 2. This is a terminal that was built over the old building of the airport, and features a very convenient layout. The car hire companies can be accessed from the baggage reclaim hall or from the main arrivals lobby. Passengers will also find their rented cars parked nearby, in the airport’s car parking area, within easy walking distance of the terminals. Vehicles hired from Lanzarote Airport may include the Ford Ka Titanium, Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Golf or Passat, the Audi A4, Opel Zafira, Seat Alhambra or Mercedes Vito.

When collecting your rented car from the airport ensure that you have all the documentation required by your chosen car hire company. Foreign drivers may need an International Driving Permit if their local license is printed in a non-Roman alphabet (with the exception of Greece). However, Spanish Law does permit all foreign drivers to carry such a document at all times, therefore is essential that an IDP is arranged before leaving for the Canaries. The primary renter, as well as all additional drivers listed on the rental contract should meet the minimum age requirements of their car hire company, which is usually 21 years of age or older. Certain car categories may however have a higher age requirement, and may not be rented by younger drivers.

A major credit card in the name of the primary renter will be used for payment, and the renter should arrange adequate insurance for his/her rented car. Some car rental quotes include collision damage waiver and theft protection, and most include third party liability insurance. Additional insurance may be required if the vehicle is to be taken on a ferry, to another of the Canary Islands, as a normal rental or a one way hire. Always confirm if this is possible from your car rental company. A one way hire from Lanzarote Airport is most convenient for travellers who will not be returning to the airport.

Beside the vehicle, passengers can also arrange the hire of child seats, luggage racks and satellite navigation systems, and disabled passengers may request the use of hand controls. This device is useful for drivers with a lower limb deficiency, as it operates the brake and accelerator pedals of an automatic vehicle. From Lanzarote Airport, hand controls should be reserved in advance, and are free of charge, but all other items of equipment will cost a few extra Euros per day of rental.

A rented car in Lanzarote is an ideal way to explore the island. The fuel is free of taxes and is therefore considered quite cheap, and fuel stations are found throughout the island, within the towns and cities and along all roads and motorways. Motorists will also have relatively seldom problems with traffic congestion, even in the busiest city of Arrecife, and will find parking for their vehicles without too much hassle. The island has an excellent road network, with roads in very good condition, and from the airport, the main LZ-2 motorway can be taken to the south of the island, to Playa Blanca, or to the north, to Arrecife and Costa Teguise. Playa Blanca is a forty-five minute drive, while the other areas nearer are about fifteen to twenty minute drives from the airport. Be sure to drive to all the spectacular beaches of Lanzarote in your rented car, and to explore the wonderful natural surroundings of the island.

Just be careful to always obey all speed limits set in place, as a heavy fine could dampen your holiday spirits. The speed limits in Lanzarote are as follows:  130 km/h or 80 mph on motorways and highways, 100 km/h or 63 mph on open roads and 50 km/h or 30 mph in urban areas. Further details regarding Lanzarote car hire options are available from your chosen rental company.
